Location: Craft Restaurant, 10100 Constellation Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90067

Treating patients with engineered cells may one day become as common as it is now to be treated with drugs made from engineered proteins, antibodies, or smaller chemicals. Cellular therapy is an emerging frontier of medicine that has the potential to address unmet needs in the treatment of critical diseases such as cancer. Genetically engineered cells are introduced into the body as therapeutic agents and can carry out functions that small-molecule drugs cannot. They are adaptable, can migrate to disease sites such as tumors, sense their local environment, and vary their responses. However, cell therapy today is a risky proposition. Once the engineered cells enter the body, there is no successful way to monitor their location, see what they are doing, or give them further instructions. Shapiro's molecular "communications equipment" answers that problem by enabling engineered cells to send out signals and receive commands using ultrasound.
Generously hosted by Dr. Chi-Fu Huang and Dr. Marina Chen (MS '80, PhD '83), Caltech Associates Board Member, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Chair's Council Member, Information Science and Technology Advisory Council Member.
