Associates East Coast Program: Designing Engineered Cells: A New Frontier of Medicine

with Mikhail Shapiro, assistant professor of chemical engineering

Location: India House, New York (Note that event times are shown in Eastern Time.)

6:00 p.m. Reception
7:00 p.m. Dinner and program

Treating patients with engineered cells may one day become as common as it now is to be treated with drugs made from engineered proteins, antibodies, or smaller chemicals. Cellular therapy is an emerging frontier of medicine that has the potential to address unmet needs in the treatment of critical diseases such as cancer. Genetically engineered cells are introduced into the body as therapeutic agents and can carry out functions that small-molecule drugs cannot. They are adaptable, can sense their local environment, and can vary their responses to home disease sites such as tumors. However, cell therapy today is a risky proposition. Once the engineered cells enter the body, there is no successful way to monitor their location, see what they are doing, or give them further instructions. Mikhail Shapiro's molecular "communications equipment" answers that problem by enabling engineered cells to send out signals and receive commands using ultrasound., assistant professor of chemical engineering, shares his experience in externally communicating with specially designed molecules inside the human body.
